Steep rise in domestic violence cases in Tumakuru district

  • 29/11/2018
  • As many as 600 cases of domestic violence were reported in Tumakuru district this year (2018-19). Compared to the last four years the number of cases of domestic violence in the district has risen by 357 cases.
  • As per the data provided by the Department of Women and Child Welfare, the number of cases of domestic violence, sexual harassment, dowry harassment and polygamy have risen sharply, causing anxiety among government officials and citizens.
  • In 2018-19 alone, Gubbi taluk topped the list of family violence cases. But what is interesting is that Pavagada, Turvekere and Sira taluks have not registered even a single case of domestic violence in any form this year.
  • However, that does not mean that there were no such domestic violence and harassment cases in these taluks. It simply means that the victims of such harassment (who are mainly women and children) have not come forth and lodged complaints. This is one reason why such data must be considered serious, rather than be dismissed as a good thing.

Hesitation to complain

  • A number of factors contribute to why domestic violence and harassment cases go unregistered. First, it is hesitation based on the fear that the victims who report such violence will be subjected to more violence if the complaint is booked.
  • Second, it is ignorance of the laws made to protect women and children.
