State-run universities can no longer recruit faculty members

  • 11/01/2019
  • Universities will no longer have the authority to recruit faculty members. In a move that it hopes will keep a check on corruption in the recruitment process, the Higher Education Department has announced that the hiring of faculty will henceforth fall under the purview of the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).
  • However, soon after the announcement was made, officials of many State universities pointed out that the move may be opposed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on the grounds that it interferes with the autonomy of a university.
  • According to the norms laid down by the UGC, State universities have to recruit or the State government has to appoint the faculty based on qualification, interview and several other processes.
