South Korea court strikes down abortion law

  • 12/04/2019
  • South Korea’s Constitutional Court overturned a ban on abortion that has stood for more than 65 years, saying in a landmark ruling that current law unconstitutionally curbs women’s rights.
  • The law criminalising a woman who undergoes abortion of her own will goes beyond the minimum needed to achieve the legislative purpose and limits the right of self-determination of the woman.
  • A survey by polling firm Realmeter last week showed more than 58% of South Korean respondents favor scrapping the ban, but a little over 30% wanted it retained.
