Number of over 15-year-old vehicles increases threefold in two years

  • The Bengaluru city had 5.55 lakh vehicles that are 15 years old as of March 2016, and the number has gone up to 16.37 lakh in the same month this year. At present, more than 20% of the vehicles in the city are over 15 years old. Out of the vehicles aged above 15 years, 10.23 lakh are two-wheelers and 4.22 lakh are cars. The city has population of 77.95 lakh vehicles.
  • A red band is painted on vehicles which are more than 15 years old for easy identification. 
  • The department claims to have taken up various measures to bring down the air pollution level in the city, like subsiding auto drivers to shift away from two-stroke engines but there are hardly any takers for the scheme. The city has 1.96 lakh autos out of which 73,325 autos are 15 years older.
  • The State government provides tax exemptions for various types of electric vehicles, but the number of registrations of these type of vehicles is negligible.
  • The department is collecting a Green Tax from non-transport vehicles.

'Green tax' on vehicles older than 15 yrs
