  • 28/11/2018
  • With injuries accounting for nearly 15% of all deaths in India and a quarter of these deaths or one out of six deaths occurring among children, the Department of Epidemiology at NIMHANS is all set to start a school-based injury prevention and safety promotion programme in Bengaluru and Kolar.
  • The department, which is also the WHO collaborating centre for injury prevention and safety promotion, is taking up the project with Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • In this connection, a stakeholder round table consultation was held on Tuesday to understand injury patterns, risk for injuries, safety appraisals and better management in school settings.
  • With increasing access to schools and decreasing drop-out rates, schools are emerging as a key setting to implement child injury prevention and safety promotion interventions.

  • With nearly 19.4 million children (0-17 years) in Karnataka and 2.2 million in Bengaluru, there is much scope to reduce injuries by implementing school-based interventions
